Wolverhampton Racecourse and Holiday Inn Staff take part in the Race Around the World Challenge

Today, 27th of July 2011 marks one year to go before the Olympic Games.  To commemorate this IHG decided to donate $150,000 to support The Shelter in the Storm Fund; with an activity called Race Around the World.  Members of Holiday Inns & IHG Partners today completed a task or a challenge of their choice for which IHG will donate $1 for every kilometer achieved.

Staff at our onsite Holiday Inn Hotel were joined by colleagues from the racecourse this evening to complete 5 laps of the track. Hotel and Operations Manager Claudette Ebanks was the driving force behind the Wolverhampton team, she said "this is a great project where every step counts and it was fantastic that so many of the staff gave up their time to take part in the challenge."

IHG is aiming to complete 150,000 kilometers globally, with IHG donating $1 for every kilometer achieved, up to a total of $150,000, to support IHG’s new Shelter in a Storm programme— a strategic partnership with the charity CARE — to develop programmes that help IHG best use their hotels and expertise to respond in disasters, providing shelter to those in need. This allows IHG to work with teams on the ground when natural and man made disasters strike, providing emergency shelter, food and clean water etc, to the local communities around affected hotels.
CARE operates in 87 countries, working on 905 community based projects, for the benefit of 82 million people — providing emergency aid during times of disaster and helping get communities back on their feet.

Wolverhampton's designers celebrated

It was hats off to shops in Wolverhampton as they showed off their best outfits for a fashion shoot at the city’s racecourse.
Big hats, glamorous outfits and dazzling accessories were the order of the day as Wolverhampton Magazine staged the shoot ahead of the racecourse’s Ladies Evening on September 3.
The magazine will feature the full set of pictures in its August edition along with an interview with the stylist, 23-year-old Vanessa Vernon from Wolverhampton, who has designs on being the country’s next Gok Wan.
Vanessa says: “Because it is so fast paced you have to have a passion for fashion. It is about learning to express yourself through what you wear.
Shops that took part in the event were Grace & Glory, Eligere and The Loft in Tettenhall and Vanessa Clarke, Diffusion and Shalom in Wolverhampton city centre.
Ruby Camp, from Teddy’s Hair Design, worked her magic on the models, capturing the essence of an evening at the races.
Vanessa, who lives in Penn, said she was delighted to find so many high-end fashion stores in the city.
“Often when people go shopping in Wolverhampton they stick to Dudley Street and the Wulfrun and Mander shopping centres,” said the young stylist, who lives in Coalway Road.
“However, if you go off the beaten track there are shops stocking designer named brands at reasonable prices.”
Models taking part in the event included Min Harike, 29, from Finchfield, who was British Asian Model of the Year 2002, and 23-year-old Natasha Price from Coven.
Min said: “It was a fantastic day and wonderful to see some of the great items that are out there this summer.
“By the end of day most of us working on the project had made a shopping list of some of their favourite items – it just shows what you can find when you start hunting around.”

Miss Black Country 2011 returns from India with a Shimmy!

Miss Black Country 2011 winner Roshni Pink has recently returned from her heart-warming charity work in India, where she has spent the last 8 weeks visiting orphanages and boys schools teaching basic English skills. Since been crowned Miss Black Country 2011 which was held at Wolverhampton Racecourse on 9th April 2011, her feet have not touched the ground since.

Roshni said “My trip to India was absolutely amazing, I had such a beautiful time and my experiences were so heart-warming... I visited boys orphanages where I distributed reading books and helped with basic English skills, it was very emotional as the boys there are the same age as my younger brothers, so it felt great to pass on a language and something so useful for their future”

Roshni also managed to get an interview of a poor orphan, who had nothing, but is now a famous dancing star because of a Dance Reality Show, which gave him the chance to prove himself. I believe this is an incredible story because generally in India it is a case of the richer getting richer and the poorer just getting poorer, they are never given a chance, which is sad because there is so much talent going to waste. I believe if children were given half of the chances we are offered in our country they could go on to-do amazing things...

Since returning home to the Black Country, Roshni has already begun her preparations for the Miss England 2011 contest as well as a number of fundraisers including, charity a carwash and Race for Life, all in aid of 'Beauty with a purpose' which is the Miss England fundraiser charity.

Roshni’s is now getting her Bedlah ready for her Belly Dancing Classes, which are to be held this weekend the Esporta gym, Broadlands, Wolverhampton in aid of 'Beauty with a purpose’. Roshini said “I am really excited about my new Belly Dance Classes, they are targeted at all age groups and an excellent way to keep fit” Roshni’s Belly Dancing classes are £4.00 per session and are being held at the Esporta gym, Broadlands, Wolverhampton in aid of 'Beauty with a purpose’  on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June, between 3.00pm – 4.00pm.
